Kendhikulhudhoo receives 800KW generator set

Fenaka Corporation Limited has installed an 800KW generator set to solve the electricity issues in Kendhikulhudhoo, Noonu Atoll.

The current powerhouse was built in 2010 and consists of three generator sets ranging between 250-520KW. The local manager of Fenaka Adam Saeed said there are increasing incidents of power outages due to high load but that the 800KW generator set will allow the powerhouse to reliably provide electricity 24 hours a day.

Speaking to PSM News, President of Kendhikulhudhoo Island Council Mohamed Rauf said the current powerhouse is located near the school and offices and is a hindrance to the employees, teachers, and students. He said the project to develop a new powerhouse away from the community will solve the issue. The government is in the process of building the new powerhouse and the transformer huts, while the fuel tank has been completely constructed. Fenaka expects to establish a modern electricity network on the island early next year.

Around 280 households are connected to the power grid and Kendhikulhudhoo Island Council stated the grid will be extended to provide electricity services to the 227 new land plots which were given out this year. The government has also commenced the Home Solar Programme in the island to improve electricity services in the island.

In order to solve the electricity issues in the atolls, the government has been building and relocating powerhouses away from local communities and upgrading the current electricity networks. As part of the initiative, Fenaka has been conducting numerous projects to establish new buildings and powerhouses across the atolls.
