President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed as the Ambassador to the United States (US). The letter of appointment to the new ambassador was presented at a ceremony held at the President’s Office.
The Parliament of the Maldives approved in late August the appointment of Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abdul Ghafoor as US Ambassador. Ghafoor was nominated by President Solih to replace Thilmeeza Hussain as the US Ambassador. Ghafoor was recently replaced as the Foreign Secretary of the Maldives by former Ambassador to Germany Ahmed Latheef and transferred to the position of Ambassador-at-Large.
A veteran of the Maldivian foreign service Ghafoor served in senior positions at the foreign ministry, including Ambassador-at-Large, Foreign Secretary, Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), and Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN Office in Geneva. He attained a Master of Arts in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, US, and completed a Postgraduate Programme in Diplomacy, Practice, Procedures, and Dynamics in the United Kingdom (UK).
