Surveyors compile list for Census 2022

Surveyors have begun compiling a list of households and businesses for Census 2022. The teams consisting of 4,000 surveyors will be compiling the list by obtaining information on citizens regarding their place of residence as of September 12.

Chief Statistician of Bureau of Statistics (MBS) Aishath Hassan said that the teams will be collecting information on the number of residents of households and their names, as well as the name of businesses and the number of employees and their names. She said that the teams formulating the list will also provide appointment chits for when surveyors will arrive to collect the detailed information.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Statistician Aishath Shahuda said that the teams will also visit vessels and resorts, and will give special stickers to the crewmen on the boats to indicate that they will be at sea during the census survey. She detailed that 1,900 surveyors will be active in Male’ City and that a team has been assigned for each island, with two surveyors assigned for every 50 households.

MBS has asked citizens to ensure that name boards are displayed outside households to facilitate the work of the surveyors compiling the list. The population census is a count of all individuals and household units across the country. During the census, data will be collected on the income and living conditions of the public. The last census in the Maldives was conducted in 2014. Census is the largest survey conducted in the country.

Census 2022 will begin on September 17 and the full report of the census will be published on National Statistics Day, which falls on October 20. Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has stated that Census 2022 is crucial for national development and appealed to all citizens to participate in the programme as part of their national duty.
