Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has called for more support to protect police officers. He made the statement after the recent violent assault of three officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
In a tweet, Commissioner Hameed said he has visited the three-drug enforcement officers who are being treated at ADK Hospital. He said that the officers were violently assaulted with weapons by members of a known crime group during their off-duty hours. He said that the two assailants have been arrested and that the police will arrest all those who were involved.
Additionally, Commissioner Hameed said he has instructed MPS to take swift actions on the matter and warned that violence against police officers will be taken very seriously. He added that the police service will not back down on efforts to tackle organised crime groups and drug-related crimes.
Furthermore, Commissioner Hameed said that the wider systems need to step up efforts to holistically tackle the problems of violent crime groups and the trafficking of narcotic drugs. He said more support is needed to protect police officers, and for MPS to be able to protect citizens and serve communities.
