Government requests to expedite 80 containers amid supply concerns

Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said that efforts are underway to expedite the shipment of 80 containers to address emerging supply challenges in the Maldives market.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, the minister noted that approximately 4,200 containers have been delayed despite ongoing cargo movements between the Maldives and Colombo. He said authorities are working to accelerate the delivery of goods, particularly in light of potential shortages of certain items in the domestic market.

The minister stated that priority has been given to essential commodities, with specific focus on expediting shipments of sunflower oil and milk. He added that the ministry is coordinating with relevant authorities in Sri Lanka to ensure the timely arrival of these goods.

“This morning, the market requested us to expedite two key products. These fall within the list of essential items, and we are prioritising their delivery to ensure availability,” Minister Saeed said.

He further explained that these items are part of a broader list of essential goods, and that efforts are being made to minimise disruptions and maintain steady supply levels across the country.

The minister also highlighted the impact of ongoing geopolitical tensions on global transportation networks, noting that recent developments involving Iran have disrupted international logistics. He said these disruptions have affected global supply chains, prompting the government to take proactive measures to safeguard the Maldivian market.

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, is working to ensure that essential goods continue to reach the country without significant delays.
