Gov't vows to maintain decentralised system

The President's Office has stated that the administration will continue to maintain the decentralised system of governance.

At a press conference, the Spokesperson at the President's Office Miuvaan Mohamed said the administration ended the centralised system of governance in the Maldives after extensive discussions with local councils and citizens. He said this has ended the various challenges faced in the administration of the atolls, such as having to wait for approval from institutions in Male' in order to conduct their work.

Additionally, Spokesperson Miuvaan said that, while major legal changes have been introduced, the government is focused on eliminating the challenges faced in the implementation of the decentralised system. As such, he noted that meetings and events are continuing to be held in order for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to hold discussions with local councils and address their concerns. He noted that the third round of the Viavathi Raajje conference will commence on September 10 in Gan, Laamu Atoll.

Furthermore, Spokesperson Miuvaan said that the administration will not allow the system of governance to return to the previous state and that it will continue to develop the decentralised system by empowering local councils. He said that funds will go towards these efforts even while the state reduces its expenditure. He also highlighted the successes of the decentralised system, such as allowing local councils to receive revenue from vehicles registered under its jurisdiction and receiving other means of revenue. He added that the relevant state institutions are working to address the concerns of the local councils and to make the necessary changes to laws and regulations.
