Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated the administration has restored an open and free media in the Maldives. He made the remarks while speaking at the valedictory ceremony of the basic journalism course conducted in collaboration with Maldives Media Council (MMC), Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom), and Shahyb Media.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Imran said that learning is the foundation of experience and he urged the participants of the course to contribute to the field of journalism responsibly and with integrity. He highlighted that the administration has paved the way for an open media to operate in the Maldives and will not restrict the freedom of independent journalists.
Furthermore, Minister Imran said that it is the moral and national duty of every journalist to exercise personal responsibility to maintain the integrity of the field. He further noted that the administration has given more freedom to the media than any previous government and that journalists should use it as an opportunity to strengthen their work. He added that societal peace and progress are heavily reliant on the work of the media. He further noted that the upcoming political activity will be heightened and urged journalists to continue providing their services in reporting accurate information.
A total of 20 participants successfully completed the basic journalism course, which was held from August 21 to September 6.
