President commences an official visit to Meemu Atoll

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has commenced an official visit to five islands of Meemu Atoll.

President Solih received a warm welcome from residents at his first stop in Raiymandhoo. During a welcome ceremony, the President of Raiymandhoo Island Council Ismail Nihad praised the administration for commencing projects to develop small island communities. He noted that Raiymandhoo has one of the smallest communities in the Maldives and that the island is now seeing the highest number of development projects in its history, which includes the development of water supply and sewerage networks and the construction of a new powerhouse.

Raiymandhoo has a population of 135 residents and the administration has commenced projects on the island totaling USD703,000. Nihad noted that Raiymandhoo receives many visitors who come for health services but that the island does not have a developed harbour. The island is known for its local medicine.

President Solih is also scheduled to visit Maduvvari, Dhiggaru, Veyvah, and Muli as part of the trip. President Solih will hold meetings with members of the Meemu Atoll Council, the island councils, and the women’s development committees (WDCs) of the respective islands. He will also meet with the island communities, inspect the progress of ongoing developmental projects, and tour public offices and institutions.

In Veyvah, President Solih will attend the ceremony held to inaugurate the newly redeveloped harbour and powerhouse. He will also attend a ceremony to mark the completion of the coastal protection project on Dhiggaru.

A delegation of government officials is accompanying President Solih on the visit. He is scheduled to conclude his trip on August 29.
