Gov't seeking contractor to restart Kolhufushi housing project

Ministry of Finance has announced it is seeking a contractor to develop and maintain the stalled housing project in Kolhufushi, Meemu Atoll.

The construction of 100 housing units in Kolhufushi was first awarded to a company in 2019 and work on the project commenced in February 2021. However, since April, the work on the project has been on hold.

The finance ministry opened the tender for Remedial Works and Completion of 100 housing units in Kolhufushi. The bidding will be held on September 12. The project worth over USD4.88 million will be contracted to be completed within 11 months and 20 days.

Speaking to PSM News, President of Kolhufushi Island Council Abdul Haleem said the foundation of only 34 houses has been completed so far and the building of only seven housing units was commenced when the project stalled. He said the housing project is crucial for the island to address the housing concerns with the increase in population.

Kolhufushi has a population of 1,400 and the number of households on the island is 200.
