Frontline prison officers begin using body-worn cameras

Frontline officers of the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) have begun using body-worn cameras.

MCS stated that the officers of the Emergency Support Group (ESG) have begun using body-worn cameras during its operations as part of the efforts to increase responsibility and accountability. The use of body-worn cameras is also expected to assist in the investigations into incidents that occur inside the prisons by keeping video and audio records available to investigators. It is also expected to safeguard prison officers.

The body-worn cameras are being used in a free trial under an agreement made with Zeta Technologies, the local distributor of US-based Axon Enterprise, in February 2022. MCS stated that it will officially begin the use of body-worn cameras soon.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has also begun using body-worn cameras. A ceremony was held to inaugurate the use of 200 body-worn cameras for front-line policing in February.
