Gov’t says top priority of MPS should be to serve citizens

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated the top priority of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) should be to serve and fulfill the expectations of citizens. He made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the police station in Kendhikulhudhoo, Noonu Atoll.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Imran said that citizens will always have demands and expectations and that it is the responsibility of MPS to meet those demands with the available resources. The minister said that the respect given to the police service is connected to the community it serves and that respect can only be maintained by establishing a peaceful community. As such, he advised police officers to work together to serve their community.

Furthermore, Minister Imran said that work towards development and progress can only be conducted with a proactive spirit and wisdom within a society that is fair and just and provides equality to its people. He said that establishing peace and security is crucial in this regard. He also said that imprisoning criminals should not be the only solution and that the MPS should work with local councils to prevent crimes.

Additionally, Minister Imran highlighted the government’s policy on the development of MPS and noted that expanding the police service to all inhabited islands by the end of this term is a top priority of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He thanked President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for prioritising public security and paving the way for the development of the police service in a short period of time.
