MTCC paves asphalt for Hanimaadhoo road development

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed paving the asphalt for the Hanimaadhoo road development project. MTCC stated that it has paved asphalt for 46,466sqm of the road as part of the project.

The road development project in Hanimaadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, was contracted to MTCC in 2019. However, the project was initially launched in 2013 and had been carried out by different contractors before it was awarded to MTCC. The project had very little progress when MTCC was awarded the project in June 2019.

Under the project, MTCC has redeveloped 20 roads of Hanimaadhoo with asphalt paving and a stormwater management system. The project also involves developing sidewalks of 16,518sqm; a carriageway of 38,916sqm, road markings of 19,679.7sqm, as well as installation of cable junction boxes and road signage. The project is worth USD4.9 million.

Hanimaadhoo has a population of over 3,000 residents and sees a large number of daily arrivals to the island from various parts of the region, as it consists of the Hanimaadhoo Airport and various other services. The residents in Hanimaadhoo have repeatedly expressed concern over the condition of the roads, which has numerous potholes and gets flooded during rainy weather.

Speaking to PSM News, President of Hanimaadhoo Council Abdul Sattar Hassan said that the island has more road traffic compared to the rest of the atoll and, as such, the completion of the road development project is crucial for the development of the island. He noted that 7.5km of road have already been developed and that MTCC has been connecting the roads and alleyways as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR).
