Maldives receives USD4.5 million as Green Tax in June

Ministry of Finance has revealed the Maldives received USD4.5 million as Green Tax in June.

Statistics from the finance ministry show the Maldives received USD4.5 million as Green Tax last month, which was generated from resorts, guesthouses, and hotels. Meanwhile, USD91,000 were generated from liveaboards in the period.

The statistics show that Kaafu Atoll and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll generated the largest sums of Green Tax in June. As such, USD1.6 million was generated as Green Tax from tourist facilities of Kaafu Atoll, which includes USD1.5 million from resorts and USD45,000 from guesthouses. Additionally, USD500,000 million was generated from tourist facilities in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, and USD428,000 was generated from Raa Atoll. The statistics also show that Faafu Atoll and Fuvahmulah City received the least in Green Tax.

The Green Fund was introduced in 2016 with the aim of tackling environmental issues in the Maldives as per the Tourism Act of the Maldives. As such, USD6 is charged as Green Tax per tourist for each day they spend at a resort or a hotel in the Maldives, while USD3 is charged as Green Tax per tourist for each day they stay at a guesthouse.
