EPA urges project proponents to adhere to EIA regulation

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has urged proponents of development projects carried out in the Maldives to submit monitoring reports in accordance to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) regulation.

In a press statement issued on July 21, EPA noted some project proponents have not been submitting the monitoring reports of projects regularly, as stipulated in the EIA regulation. EPA added some proponents have also not been informing the agency the starting dates of projects as stipulated in the permits issued by the agency, while also failing to suspend work of projects in accordance to weather alerts. Therefore, EPA urged proponents to adhere to the EIA regulation and permits issued by the agency, in order to minimise the impact of the projects to the environment.

The statement was released following EPA’s decision to order the suspension of the harbour development project in Hulhudhoo, Addu City. EPA ordered the suspension of the project, citing violations of the EIA report prepared for the project.
