Thoddoo harbour development 50% complete

Thoddoo Island Council has revealed that the island’s harbour development is 50% complete and that the entire project is expected to be finished by October.

The growing tourism business in Thoddoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll, has made it necessary to develop its harbour. The first harbour was developed in 2002 but has since become outdated and barely usable, with part of its outer wall having been broken and fragmented. The government hired a contractor to develop the 650ft harbour and extend it by 450ft in 2021.

President of Thoddoo Island Council Ahmed Karam said that the number of large speedboats and dinghies used for excursions have increased due to the local tourism sector. He said that the council has made plans to develop the harbour area for public convenience upon completion of the harbour extension. He detailed that a full-fledged port service will be established in the area, along with a cargo terminal, fish market, and security services.

Furthermore, Karam said that a daily average of 130 tourists visit Thoddoo, which has resulted in more speedboats arriving in the island. As such, he said that the island residents and businesses have great expectations for the development of the harbour. He added that the new harbour will also facilitate easier transport of agricultural products from the island.
