Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has revealed that the shore protection project in Nellaidhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, is halfway complete.
MTCC stated that the design and build of shore protection structures at Nellaidhoo is underway, with 41% project progress while construction of the revetment is ongoing with 30% completion. The scope of the work include the construction of a 870m rock boulder revetment. The work began after the second shipment of rock boulders needed for the project was delivered to the project site in May. Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure contracted MTCC to complete the shore protection project at a cost of USD1.3 million.
Nellaidhoo has a population of 800 residents. The island has a longstanding issue of erosion. Speaking to PSM News, Nellaidhoo Island Council stated that the northern side of the island has been completely eroded but that the shore protection project is ongoing at a rapid pace. The council stated that the project is expected to be completed next year.
MTCC has also recently completed the development of the harbour in Nellaidhoo. The aim of the project was to resolve the difficulties faced by local vessels in entering and exiting the island. Nellaidhoo is involved in tourism and fishing to generate revenue and has over 60 fishing vessels.
