MPS investigating death threats made against Youth Minister Mahloof

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has started investigating death threats made against Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof.

The death threats were made following the arrest of individuals involved in violent disruption of the World Yoga Day event held at the National Stadium on June 21. The event, organised by the youth ministry and the Indian High Commission in the Maldives, was disrupted when a group of individuals broke through the police barricades and entered the stadium, damaging some items in the area and attacking participants.

Youth Minister Mahloof revealed he received death threats via text messages following the arrest of individuals involved in the incident. He said the case has been brought to the attention of MPS.

MPS has arrested a total of 12 people over the incident, including former Parliamentarian Mohamed Ismail and religious scholars Sheikh Fazloon Mohamed and Sheikh Adam Nishan. Others arrested over the incident include Ibrahim Razzan, Ahmed Nasooh, Abdulla Rifau, Mohamed Mausoom, Mohamed Hussain, Ameen Ahmed, Mohamed Nadheem, Mohamed Zilyan and Shamy Rashad Idrees.
