Vice President says SOEs have crucial role in employing youth

Vice President Faisal Naseem has stated that state-owned enterprises (SOEs) have a crucial role in employing marginalised youth. He made the remarks while speaking at the function held to mark the 25th anniversary of the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO).

Speaking at the function, Vice President Naseem said that SOEs play a pivotal role in the administration’s developmental efforts and that national progress cannot be achieved by leaving citizens behind. As such, the president said that people with special needs should be given the opportunity to work and contribute. He noted that STELCO currently employs 35 individuals with special needs and said that such employees need an inclusive and cohesive work environment where people with disabilities are encouraged and assisted.

Furthermore, Vice President Naseem highlighted the importance of working together to overcome the major drug problems in the country by helping young people overcome their addiction and re-integrate to their communities. He added that SOEs can play a critical role in these efforts. He also noted the increase in traffic incidents and said that 1,150 road accidents have been recorded so far this year.

At the ceremony, Vice President Naseem presented awards to former managing directors who have served STELCO over the past 25 years, and other long-serving staff and best-performing managers.
