Addu City Council has begun work to formulate the registry for vehicles and vessels.
The council stated it will be registering vehicles and vessels in Addu until June 10. It is conducting the work as part of the new responsibilities it was given after the government allowed local councils to receive revenue from vehicles and vessels registered in their administrative region.
Mayor of Addu City Ali Nizar said the council requested the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation to provide the list of registered vehicles, but that its system only filters vehicles registered in different zones and is not able to filter vehicles registered in the city. He said that the council began work to register vehicles after concluding discussions with the government.
Individuals in Addu are able to register their vehicles or vessels with the online Google form provided by the city council or by sending the information via Viber with photos of the license plate and a copy of their registration form.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) stated that it will be providing information to the council on vehicles and vessels registered in Addu in the past five years. MPS will also be informing the council of the activities it is conducting to increase awareness of helmet regulations.
The government has been giving more responsibilities and authority to local councils under the Decentralisation Act and allows them to receive the revenue generated from their administrative region.
