Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has revealed facade and roofing works are set to begin at the new passenger terminal under development at the Velana International Airport (VIA).
Providing updates on the progress of the project to develop the new passenger terminal of VIA, MACL stated most of the concrete substructure and superstructure of the building has been completed. MACL said installation of the steel structure of the building is currently ongoing, adding facade and roofing works are also set to begin. MACL said the overall progress of the project is currently at 30%.
The estimated cost of the new passenger terminal of VIA, which is developed in an area of 78,000 square metres, is USD 357 million. The project is funded by the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD).
The project was initially contracted to Saudi Bin Laden Group on May, 22 2016. The project was put on hold due to different reasons, before the contract was revised and resigned with the Bin Laden Group in 2019.
The current passenger terminal at VIA handles 1.5 million passengers a year. MACL hopes to cater an estimated 7 million passengers a year when the new passenger terminal is completed.
