Facility to be developed in Addu to manage hazardous waste

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has decided to establish a facility in Addu City to store and manage hazardous waste.

The environment ministry began a survey this week to gather information on the type and amount of hazardous waste produced by households and workplaces in Addu City and the current procedures followed at domestic level to manage hazardous waste. The survey also aims to gather public opinion on charging a fee for management of hazardous waste.

In addition to a hazardous waste management facility, Addu City will also have a waste-to-energy plant at the regional waste management facility of the city. The environment ministry stated the waste-to-energy plant will burn 50 tonnes of waste per day and generate 1.5MW of electricity per hour in Addu. Installation of the waste-to-energy plant is currently ongoing.
