State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has prepared to begin two huge renewable energy projects in Male’ City this year.
The projects are part of the government's efforts to convert electricity production to renewable energy sources across the country. STELCO is playing a huge role in establishing renewable energy sources and has introduced renewable energy on many islands.
Managing Director Ahmed Shareef said STELCO has decided to rent the roof of houses in Male’ City to install solar panels and that the fieldwork will begin this year. He said the company plans to reduce the electricity bills for households that generate electricity using solar panels.
Furthermore, Shareef said the second project aims to increase the power capacity in Male’ City by two megawatts by installing solar panels. He said STELCO has received permission from the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology to conduct the project and that the current phase involves allocating a land plot with the assistance of the Male’ City Council.
A large part of the state budget has been allocated for the development of renewable energy in order to reduce the country’s reliance on oil imports and minimise the damage to the environment. As such, the main utility companies STELCO and Fenaka Corporation Limited have been conducting projects for the initiative.
