China signs certificate of assistance for Maldives foreign ministry

The Maldives and China have signed the Certificate of Assistance for the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The certificate was signed by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel and Ambassador of China to the Maldives Wang Lixin. The assistance was initially announced in January during the official visit to the Maldives by State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Yi to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The assistance, which totals the sum of USD310,000, will be used to complete certain aspects of the foreign ministry building renovation programme, and will also be used for training and capacity building purposes. The foreign ministry building was completed in 2006 with the assistance of the Government of China, which has continued to extend its support under the initiative to renovate the building, which commenced in 2019. The building was formally inaugurated by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in 2021.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Chinese government for its continued support and cooperation in further strengthening the Maldives-China bilateral relations.
