The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has held voting for three by-elections.
ECM is holding by-elections for the seat of the President of Kurendhoo Island Council, and for seats in the Women's Development Committees (WDCs) in Nilandhoo, Faafu Atoll, and Meedhoo, Dhaalu Atoll.
The electoral body decided to hold the by-election for Kurendhoo Island Council after the resignation of President Ibrahim Shimaau. The candidates vying for the seat consist of candidate of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ali Naseem and candidate of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Ismail Madheeh.
A total of 1,541 residents of Kurendhoo, Lhaviyani Atoll, are eligible to vote in the by-election, with 930 individuals eligible to place their ballots in the two ballot boxes in Kurendhoo, and 611 individuals eligible to place their ballots in the box placed in Male’ City. A total of 1,382 individuals are eligible to place their ballots for the three by-elections in the ballot boxes placed in Male’ City.
Five candidates are running in the Milandhoo WDC by-election, including a PPM candidate, a candidate of Maldives National Party (MNP), and three independent candidates. Four candidates are running in the Meedhoo WDC by-election, including candidates from MDP, PPM, and MNP, and an independent candidate.
ECM stated each polling station will announce their results after counting the votes, and the final results for all three by-elections will be announced in Male’ City.
