Cardiac Centre boosts public confidence in IGMH, says MCGH CEO

Public trust in the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has increased significantly due to the National Cardiac Centre, Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, Chief Executive Officer of the Malé City Group of Hospitals, has stated.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the National Cardiac Centre, Haleem said the facility has, since its establishment, become one of the most successful and specialised centres operating under the Malé City Group of Hospitals. He said the centre has set an example in the delivery of specialised healthcare services, adding that continued improvements in the quality of care have strengthened public confidence in IGMH.

Haleem noted that the establishment of the centre has significantly enhanced cardiovascular services in the Maldives, enabling patients to receive treatment for heart conditions within the country instead of travelling abroad.

“Initiating heart treatment and working to expand it further was a proactive effort. This is a result to be proud of. It is an invaluable gift to the public,” Haleem said.

Furthermore, he said the centre has achieved significant progress over the past decade and continues to pursue important objectives for the future. He also said the National Cardiac Centre plays a vital role in reducing the number of patients who need to travel overseas for cardiac treatment while also contributing to the development of skilled local healthcare professionals.

Highlighting ongoing developments and future plans, Haleem said services at the Cath Lab in Addu City, which began operating in February, are progressing successfully.

He revealed that Addu Equatorial Hospital has so far carried out 38 angiograms, 20 angioplasties, one carotid artery angiography, one pacemaker implantation and one automated implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD) implantation.

“In addition, discussions have begun with Kulhudhuffushi Hospital to establish a Cath Lab in Kulhudhuffushi. Once the necessary space for the Cath Lab is secured, we will introduce cardiac interventions in the northern region of the Maldives as well,” Haleem said.

The CEO also noted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has instructed the expansion of treatment services for heart disease, neurological disorders and cancer.

He further stated that services at the Cath Lab, which had previously been suspended after the facility remained unused due to operational issues, resumed under the current administration.
