Shafraz Naeem spends more than 25 hours underwater

Shafraz Naeem has spent more than 25 hours underwater. He began his dive on February 25, 2022 around 1530hrs.

Unix Sporting has revealed Shafraz Naeem, who is currently attempting a 50 hours underwater dive to complete the Ocean 6/50 event has spent more than 25 hours underwater and that he is in good health.

Ocean 6|50 is an extreme dive event held in Kuda Giri, South Male’ Atoll from February 25 – 27, 2022. The objective of the event is to call attention to the damage done by plastic pollution to our marine ecosystems and to promote alternatives to plastic as well as sustainable and environment friendly practices within our communities. The event is held as part of the celebrations of the golden jubilee of Maldives’ tourism industry.

As part of the Ocean 6|50 event, Shafraz Naeem is spending 50 hours 6 metres underwater at Kuda Giri. A pledge signing where other divers can visit and pledge their support to the cause is also arranged during the event.

Shafraz is an ex-military dive instructor with a 27-year career in the diving industry. He is an experienced TDI/SDI, PADI and SSI instructor and has trained divers in the Maldivian Coast Guard, Special Forces and Marines. He has extensive knowledge about the Maldivian marine ecosystem and has explored deep cave systems and reefs in the Maldives. He is an award winning underwater photographer featured in international and local publications and has 14 years of experience in the field of underwater photography. The event is expected to bring together international and local diving community and environmental researchers and advocates to raise awareness and promote meaningful solutions to the issues of plastic pollution and our diminishing marine ecosystem.

When Shafraz completes the full 2-day immersion, he would then hold the national and regional record for the longest open saltwater scuba dive.
