Parliamentarians Ali Azim and Mohamed Aslam have announced their candidacies for the position of Parliamentary Group (PG) Leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
MDP has decided to elect its PG leader on February 18, following the expiry of the three-year term of Parliamentarian Ali Azim last month. The main ruling party will be accepting candidacies for the election until February 17. The party will be electing a PG leader, two PG deputy leaders, a speaker, and a deputy speaker, as well as six chief whips.
Parliamentarian Aslam has expressed concern over a lack of a PG leader and is currently working to gain support for his bid for the position. Parliamentarian Azim announced he is contesting for another term and is also working to gain support.
Additionally, MDP has scheduled to elect its chairperson on April 16, after the five-year term of the incumbent Chairperson Hassan Latheef expired on February 10.
The party has also scheduled to hold the party congress on August 4.
