Civil Court orders arrest of Parliamentarian Jabir

Civil Court of the Maldives (CCM) has released an order to arrest and present the Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Abdulla Jabir to court. The court order is regarding a case in which DRP owes USD71,000 to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

The Civil Court previously ordered DRP to pay the amount for services provided by MTCC between 2007 and 2009. DRP has failed to pay the amount despite the Supreme Court denying the party permission to appeal the case.

DRP was the second party to be registered in the Maldives and had become notable for its accomplishments under the leadership of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. However, the former president and some senior party leaders left DRP, following disagreements within the party, to form the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

DRP had accumulated a large amount of debt at the time the leaders left the party and has since been ordered by the court to pay finances owed to MTCC, HUB Company Private Limited, and Parliamentarian Ahmed Amir.

Parliamentarian Abdulla Jabir was appointed as leader of DRP in 2019, replacing former party leader Mohamed Nasheed.
