The national airline, Maldivian, has signed signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UAE-based airline Emirates to collaborate on services through joint packages and connected flights.
The MoU signed between Maldivian and the Emirates would enable the two airlines to explore codeshare, interline, and joint holiday package opportunities. The two airlines are reviewing a codeshare agreement that will enable Emirates’ customers to book and connect from Male’ to destinations served by Maldivian. The collaboration would also include exclusive holiday packages with resort stays and tours.
Speaking on the agreement, Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer noted Emirates' impact to the Maldives' tourism industry is significant, with the airline ranking first in terms of international passenger traffic. He stated the partnership between the two airlines will benefit the Maldivian economy and strengthen economic ties between the Maldives and the UAE.
Managing Director of Maldivian Mohamed Mihad said the opportunity to explore a partnership with the largest airline in the world brings about endless opportunities for Maldivian. He said the growth prospects that could follow such a partnership is key as the national airline looks to expand its operations and develop partnerships that will allow the airline to position itself in the post-COVID aviation industry.
Meanwhile, Emirates’ Chief Commercial Officer Adnan Kazim noted the Maldives is one of the most popular leisure destinations in Emirates’ network, adding the airlines is pleased to be exploring a partnership with the nation’s local carrier. He added a codeshare and interline agreement will immensely benefit both carriers.
Emirates launched operations to the Maldives in 1987. The airline currently conducts 28 weekly flights to the Maldives.
