President highlights importance of international cooperation in tackling climate change

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated the Maldives needs cooperation from the international community in the efforts to combat climate change. He made the remarks in a meeting held with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) Dr. Patrick Verkooijen.

During the meeting, President Solih welcomed Dr. Verkooijen to the Maldives and discussed the Maldives’ climate change adaptation efforts at length. Outlining the Maldives’ ambitious plans to combat climate change, the president highlighted that the Maldives requires cooperation and assistance from international partners, particularly in gaining access to finance for climate adaptation.

During the discussions, Dr. Verkooijen briefed the president on GCA’s ongoing negotiations and working partnership with the Maldives and other international partners on climate change adaptation. He stressed that the GCA is providing a concrete work schedule of initiatives to meet President Solih's vision of climate objectives. He also assured the president that GCA would continue to support and assist the Maldives in tackling and achieving its climate objectives.

GCA is a Netherlands-based international organisation working as a solutions broker to accelerate, innovate, and scale adaptation action for a climate-resilient world.
