Three islands in Shaviyani Atoll open for resort development

Ministry of Tourism has announced three islands in Shaviyani Atoll have been opened for resort development.

The tourism ministry stated Dhigurah, Medhurah, and Mairah have been opened for resort development as part of the government's strategy to get an economy of scale for tourism in all the atolls. The ministry stated the islands, which are near Komandoo, have been tendered for resort development via open bidding as a single project.

The ministry has opened applications for parties interesting in the lease, development, operation, and management of a tourist resort on the islands. As such, interested parties are required to propose an amount no less than the amount specified by the tourism ministry, to be paid as the lease acquisition cost of the Islands.

The parties are required to pay the amount on or before 60 days from the date of the Letter of Award for the acquisition of the leasehold rights of the islands. The three islands consist of 19 hectares and will be leased for a total amount of USD 1.2 million.

The islands are now included in the list of 18 islands the government has opened for resort development in October 2021.
