Citizens responsible for strengthening nation: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated citizens have a responsibility to strengthen the foundations of the Maldives.

In a message on Huravee Day, Minister Imran highlighted the importance of remembering national heroes who had made sacrifices for the country. The minister said every citizen should celebrate national days by accepting personal responsibility in strengthening and upholding the foundations of the nation.

He said the nation is founded on Islam as well as the Dhivehi language and culture and that maintaining these foundations is the responsibility of each citizen. He added that religion, language, and culture should be maintained for the sake of future generations. He also said each person should celebrate Huravee Day by renewing their vows to protect religion and national sovereignty.

The Government of the Maldives has scheduled the Huravee Day celebrations for January 28 and 29 in Hura, Kaafu Atoll. Huravee Day is marked to commemorate the uprising spearheaded by Sultan Hassan Izzuddeen, which saw the Maldives freed from the Malabaris of sourthern India, after their brief occupation in 1752.
