Bank of Maldives (BML) has announced the opening of a fish cleaning platform in Maalhendhoo, Noonu Atoll with the support of its Community Fund programme.
The project was carried out by the island-based, Society for Leaders Initiate Development (SLID). The platform was designed to be used during the day and night with appropriate lighting, a storage unit, clean water, and stations for eight people. The wastewater is directly removed through the drains and dustbins have been placed in the area.
SLID said the aim of the project was to find a solution for the difficulties that fishermen faced on the island. SLID added the jetty was used to carry out fish cleaning even during bad weather conditions. It expressed hope the islanders and local fishermen will be able to clean and sell fish in a more convenient manner following the project.
The platform was opened on January 1, 2022. For the opening ceremony, SLID conducted a fish cleaning contest which gained a lot of popularity among the island community.
BML has financially supported 60 projects across the country since the introduction of the Community Fund.
