IUM to begin a PhD programme in education

Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) reveals it will soon begin a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in education. IUM is currently conducting PhD programmes in Islamic jurisprudence and has awarded PhDs to the first graduates in October 2021.

Speaking to PSM News, Registrar Ahmed Rauf said IUM has received praise for its PhD programme and is receiving many applications from students. He said the programme is conducted with participation from numerous students but that IUM has found it difficult to hire an adequate number of supervisors. He said IUM is hiring supervisors from abroad in order to solve the problem, and noted that there are currently 22 students in the PhD programme. He said IUM will begin the PhD programme in education this year and that the university will become notable for the high number of PhD graduates in the education sector.

IUM has opened the opportunity for students to participate in 59 courses in 2022, which include 13 master's level courses and nine degree level courses. The university has introduced brand new courses for the new semester, including Islamic studies, master of teaching and learning, and master of teaching and learning the Quran. It will also begin an Islamic finance programme in March in collaboration with Malaysia's International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF).
