Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has recorded an increase in the purchase of fish from all parts of the country.
MIFCO revealed the Maldives is now experiencing a high fishing season, with vessels from all parts of the country catching more fish. MIFCO said the company has been purchasing 400-500 tonnes per day on average for the past two weeks. MIFCO said fishing is particularly good in the southern atolls, with some vessels in the region recording daily catches of 5-25 tonnes.
As per the latest statistics, MIFCO has purchased more than 54,600 tonnes of fish from local fishing vessels this year, exceeding the 49,392 tonnes bought last year. The company said payment is disbursed to fishermen on a weekly basis.
