MTCC should navigate to international projects: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) must target to build bridges and widen their scope of function by aiming for international projects. He made the statement in his remarks at the ceremony held to mark the 41st anniversary of the state-owned company.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Solih acknowledged the noteworthy progress and achievements of MTCC over the past couple of years and stated the company is an important partner in the infrastructure development of the Maldives. The president has said he is proud of MTCC and the name the company has made for itself. As such, the president said MTCC gives assurance that all projects contracted to the company would be completed at the given period at the best possible level. He mentioned it was an assurance secured by MTCC that shows it had gained a place in the hearts of the people with confidence.

Noting MTCC provides the most essential services required by the public, President Solih underlined the company was putting noteworthy efforts to provide opportunities for the people in the economic sector of the Maldives as well. The president expressed since the revolution in the fisheries sector, MTCC has played a major role in providing modern resources required for the Maldivian fisheries industry.

The president expressed hope MTCC would expand its services and accelerate its growth overcoming the disruptions and challenges faced by the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic in line with the efforts of the government to revive the economy. He also said that MTCC should now target to carry out bigger projects such as bridge construction and international projects along with ongoing projects.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Solih said environmental protection should be prioritised when talking about development, adding basic service projects of MTCC include environmental projects as well. The president reiterated the environment must not be destroyed to bring development. He also said it is important to ensure that infrastructural development is brought to benefit the islands in a sustainable manner.
