Ungoofaaru Islamic Centre officially opened

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Zahir has inaugurated the Ungoofaaru Islamic Centre.

The Islamic centre in Ungoofaaru, Raa Atoll, was built at a cost of USD 1.8 million from the state budget. The centre was named Masjid Al-Dhuktoor Afrasheem Ali, in honour of religious scholar and Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali who was murdered in 2012.

The Ungoofaaru Islamic Centre consists of four classrooms, a library, pantry, admin office, and hall. The two-storey building also consists of a 5,000 square feet praying area, which can accommodate 900 worshippers. The Islamic ministry stated the centre also has an ablution and praying area for women.

The previous administration contracted SJ Construction Private Limited to construct the Islamic centre in March 2017. The company completed construction of the centre in January 2020.
