SmartCom inaugurates to digitally connect all communities in Hulhumale'

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has introduced SmartCom in efforts to digitally connect all communities in Hulhumale'.

The brand was introduced as part of the project initiated by the HDC to develop Hulhumale' as a smart city. The brand was launched by Minister of Economic Affairs Fayyaz Ismail at a ceremony held at Hotel Jen.

HDC said various smart solutions will be introduced to carry out the work in Hulhumale' under the SmartCom brand and partnerships will be established with the people. The corporation said the brand will make the lives of the people easier using technology and creativity.

Speaking at the ceremony, Economic Minister Fayyaz said digitalising the country is a top priority of this administration, noting the government has invested very little in digitalisation in the past. He added the services required by the people can only be provided through the development of technology and the current government invests in digitalisation projects recognising the importance.

The minister expressed belief the projects conducted in collaboration with international partners are an important step forward in the government's digitalisation programme. He also said the SmartCom project will be a good experience for others and will facilitate positive development for the government as well as other private sectors.

Moreover, Managing Director of HDC Suhail Ahmed said the purpose of creating a smart city is to overcome challenges that are faced in a community with a large population. Suhail also said that digital infrastructure will also be established in Hulhumale', Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.

Highlighting cities are developed using technology in many countries around the world, he said these resources achieve many goals such as establishing a full-fledged transport system, waste management, and creating a safe environment. Smart solutions provided within the SmartCom project will improve health and transport systems, according to HDC.
The corporation also stated that improving services to the public, ensuring safety in public places, and creating job opportunities is an aim of the project, in addition to business and economic development.

As part of the efforts to make Hulhumale' a smart city, major efforts to establish a digital infrastructure with the first open-access network in the Maldives have been completed. The network will provide telecommunications services, internet, and television services through a single network.
