Daily fishing average nearing 800 tonnes

Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has revealed the daily average of fish caught by local fishing vessels is currently nearing 800 tonnes.

MIFCO said the Maldives is currently experiencing a high fishing season in the southern atolls. In this regard, MIFCO said 750 tonnes of fish were caught in the southern atolls alone on December 2, with another 45 tonnes caught from the northern atolls. MIFCO said the daily average of fish caught in the country is now nearing 800 tonnes.

Furthermore, MIFCO said the increased fishing numbers places a high demand on the weighing and purchasing operations at MIFCO. The state-owned company said it is now working alongside two other local fishing companies to expand the operations to purchase fish from vessels.

As per the latest statistics published by the local fishermen’s organization, all fishing vessels in the southern atolls are currently recording an average catch of 15-20 tonnes per day last week. The largest numbers were recorded by a vessel names TS Line from Madaveli, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, with an average of 50 tonnes per day.
