Solar energy storage and management systems inaugurated in Addu

The Energy Management System (EMS) and the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) installed in Addu City has been officially inaugurated.

The systems were installed in Addu under the grant assistance of the Japanese Fund for Joint Credit Mechanism (JFJCM). The systems were officially inaugurated by Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna during a special ceremony held on December 2. The ceremony was also attended by the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Keiko Yanai.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Shauna said the lack of an energy storage system along with the previously installed solar hybrid system in Addu had resulted in difficulties in maximising the benefits of solar power generation. The minister noted the newly installed storage and management systems will facilitate solar power to be distributed in an efficient manner. She added the systems will help to save 800,000 litres of fuel annually.

The government is undertaking several projects and programmes for renewable energy transition across the country. As such, the government has announced projects to install solar PV systems in 10 atolls of the Maldives.
