Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated the judiciary is being reformed and gaining public trust. He made the statement while speaking on the Ask Speaker programme, in which he answered parliament-related questions from the public.
Speaker Nasheed said the judiciary is still continuing to be reformed and that the response to the Supreme Court's verdict on former President Abdulla Yameen's appeal case has shown that the court has the public's trust. The speaker noted it was the first time a Maldivian state leader has been able to overturn a prison sentence after stepping down from his position.
He noted that in the past 2,000 years of Maldivian history, leaders are usually exiled, killed, or kept in prison after their convictions. He said the Supreme Court's verdict is a sign of positive changes being brought to the judiciary.
Furthermore, Speaker Nasheed said the Supreme Court's verdict has shown various issues in the prosecution and investigation of the case and that these areas also need to be reformed. The speaker also noted the government has pledged to amend some articles of the Constitution of the Maldives and make changes to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
He added that making all the necessary amendments to the constitution at once is better than making minor amendments at different times.
