Solar PV systems to be installed in 12 islands of Thaa Atoll

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has signed a contract with Sino Soar Hybrid Technology of China for the design, supply, installation and maintenance of grid-tied solar PV-diesel hybrid power generation plants in all 12 inhabited islands of Thaa Atoll.

The contract was signed on November 29 by Environment Minister Aminath Shauna and the Project Manager of Sino Soar Hybrid Techology Kao Xiaoming. Under this contract, 2.5MW of Solar PV, 975kW of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be installed. The project is expected to avoid 2,900 tons of carbon dioxide emission annually.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Shauna said the project is part of the steps towards achieving net-zero in 2030. She noted the Maldives has established 36.7 megawatts of solar PV, a 45% increase from 16.5 megawatts that had been established by the end of 2018. She added the Maldives is moving forward in the field of renewable energy, stating the goal is to increase hybrid system up to 50 megawatts.
