ECM rejects application to form United Suvadive Party

Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has rejected the application to form a party called United Suvadive Party.

The application to form United Suvadive Party was submitted to ECM by Mohamed Yaseen on October 15. ECM stated the application to form the party has been rejected as the party has been named after a specific region of the country, which goes against the Political Parties Act of the Maldives. The act states a political party cannot be named after a person, island, atoll or region.

There are currently 11 political parties registered in the Maldives. There are more parties in the process of formation.
