The government has decided to commence operations of satellite schools in January 2022.
Satellite schools are established in islands with very little populations that do not have enough students to run a school. As such, the development of satellite schools are underway in Rakeedhoo and Thinadhoo in Vaavu Atoll and Fehendhoo in Baa Atoll.
Speaking at the ceremony held to award the top achievers of the 2019 O’Level examinations, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih revealed the satellite schools in these three islands will begin operations for the second term of the ongoing academic year. The second term of the current academic year will begin on January 16.
The president further stated the development of satellite schools will remove the need for students of these three islands to travel by sea to other islands every day. He noted students of the satellite school will be taught by teachers at the satellite hub established at Huravee School in Male’.
Ministry of Education had earlier stated all islands with satellite schools would have a building where students can attend classes, with teachers to be allocated for each grade. The ministry stated extra-curricular activities will be carried out in coordination with other schools.
