Large share of global electricity generation come from renewables: PGA

President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA) Abdulla Shahid has stated renewables now contribute to a large share of global electricity generation.

Speaking to PSM News in Glasgow, Scotland, PGA Shahid said the achievement is the result of small island nations working together for environmental protection and climate change action. The PGA noted the Maldives has been warning against climate change and the rise in sea level since 1987, as small island nations are most at risk. In this regard, the PGA said it is crucial for all small island nations to work together for climate change action. The 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) is an important platform for climate change action and highlighted that state leaders at the event have agreed to stop deforestation, he added.

PGA Shahid also noted the UK has created a roadmap to reach USD 100 billion for climate change action by 2023. He called on all nations to work together to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees and said efforts for climate change action not only benefit the Maldives but help the globe.

The Maldives plays a key role in the international arena advocating for action on climate change and most notably advocated for fiscal support of resilience building and climate adaptation for lesser-developed nations. The Maldives also encourages small island nations to present unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the international arena.

The country has participated in intergovernmental organisations to national-level activities to spearhead efforts to address and bring global attention to the climate emergency.
