Speaker Nasheed departs to attend COP26

Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has departed to attend 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland. The world's largest environmental summit, COP26, will begin on October 31.

Speaking at the parliament sitting last week, Speaker Nasheed said during COP26 he will advocate seeking financial assistance to protect the delicate environment of the Maldives. He said President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih getting the opportunity to attend the summit was another chance to bring the vulnerability of the environment of Maldives to the attention of the world.

COP26 will see the attendance of heads of state of over 100 countries. It is noteworthy that a sitting president of Maldives is attending the summit after 12 years. It is expected to be the largest such meeting since the 2015 Paris Agreement.

COP26 will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
