International community must unite in the fight against terrorism: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has highlighted the importance of cooperation and unity among the international community to fight extremism and terrorism. He made the remarks in his address at the Global Security Forum, held in Doha, Qatar.

Speaking at the forum, Minister Imran stated the Maldives has held productive discussions on critical matters facing nations and has explored the different areas where countries in the region and around the world can work together to achieve solutions to these mostly common issues. The home minister said while individual nations may be tempted to focus on maximising self-interests, all nations must be cautious of the far-reaching impacts of their actions to global security. He added

Speaking further, Minister Imran stated the Maldives is especially vulnerable to the myriad of issues that have been discussed, such as the climate crisis, both domestic and international terrorism, as well as the shifting scales of geo-political power dynamics. He appreciated the selfless partnership demonstrated by nations in this critical time, noting this has been a true testimony of how cooperation between nations can help overcome the greatest of challenges.

The home minister further stated Afghanistan, as well as Syria and Iraq before it, demonstrate that destabilising events are not necessarily confined to national borders, and may have lasting ripple effects on a global scale. He added it is in the best interests of all to stay prepared.

Speaking further, Minister Imran noted under the premises of countering violent extremism, the Maldivian government recently established the National Reintegration Center which is designed and equipped to rehabilitate returnees and help their reintegration back to the society. He expressed belief that the future of counter-terrorism lies in the strengthening of local and international efforts to prevent and counter violent extremism. He highlighted the importance of efforts that address vulnerabilities in communities and efforts that seek to adequately and humanely repatriate and rehabilitate returnees.

In his address, the home minister stated the Maldives recognises that the challenges of terrorism and extremism require global solutions. He said the Maldives places a high priority to establish connections and work together to achieve common objectives. He added the international community must present a united front in the face of evolving and daunting challenges.
