Maldivian values need to be instilled in youth: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated younger generations need to be taught the importance of Maldivian history and values.

Speaking at the National Day ceremony, Minister Imran said the country needs to build a resilient younger generation that will instill peace in the country, at a time when mass media is creating discord. The highest value of any country is for citizens to fight for national independence and protect the rights of every individual within the country, noted the minister.

The minister highlighted the sacrifices made by Maldivian forebears to protect the country's independence and values and said it should be the responsibility of the current generations to instill these values in their children.

Furthermore, Minister Imran said Maldivians should also teach their children Islamic values, as the foundation of Maldivian values is Islam. The minister also stressed the need for younger generations to learn and respect the Maldivian language and history. He also highlighted the importance of learning long-standing cultural and social etiquette such as respecting elders and nurturing children.

Additionally, Minister Imran congratulated the award winners at the ceremony and said the laurels they received is a result of notable services to the country. The minister also thanked the President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Abdulla Shahid for attending the National Day ceremony.

He concluded his remarks by giving his best wishes to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, First Lady Fazna Ahmed and the citizens of the Maldives.
