Ministry of Education has revealed higher secondary education is now available in all atolls of the Maldives.
Higher secondary education became available in all atolls following the commencement of higher secondary studies in Keyodhoo School of Vaavu Atoll. Higher secondary studies at Keyodhoo School was inaugurated at a special ceremony held on September 30.
Following the inauguration of higher secondary education at Keyodhoo School, higher secondary education is now available in all 20 atolls of the Maldives, across 34 government schools. There are 1,173 students in the 34 higher secondary schools in the Maldives.
As per the previous policies of the education ministry, higher secondary or A’Level studies can begin in a school with at least 10 students who have passed 5 subjects in the O’Level examinations. However, the education ministry revised its policy to allow any school with the resources and facilities as well as students who wish to study, to begin higher secondary education.
Speaking to PSM News, Principal of Keyodhoo School Zaeema Hussain said the school had undertaken several efforts over the years to begin higher secondary education. As such, she noted a special classroom has been established for A’Level students with the help of the Vaavu Atoll Council to resolve the issues related to lack of space in the school. She noted A’Level studies will begin at the school with 6 of the 9 students who completed O’Level at the school this year. She added A’Level subjects will be taught by the same teachers who are teaching O’Level subjects in the school.
Keyodhoo School has a population of 212 students, across all grades. The school is the largest in Vaavu Atoll, the smallest atoll in the Maldives.
