Tourism occupancy rate at 62% in August: MMA

Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has revealed the tourism occupancy rate was at 62% in August.

The occupancy rate for last month was revealed in the economic update report published by the central bank. Around 31,000 beds were put into operation by tourism businesses in August, according to the report.

MMA stated the numbers show a large improvement in the Maldives tourism industry, as the occupancy rate was at 49% in July. Additionally, MMA stated the occupancy rate was at 12% in August last year. However, the report also shows the length of stay for tourists has decreased this year compared to 2020.

The report shows the length of stay this year has reached an average of nine days, while the average length of stay in 2020 was at 23 days. The number of bed nights has also increased this year, with a 7% improvement in August this year compared to the same month in 2019.
